Interviews
Since November 2023, I have spent many hours in difficult conversations that have swung between quiet hope and vivid despair, frustration, fury and profound sadness. I have witnessed the crippling shame and guilt that accompanies a long-held taboo: that loneliness is still something to be ashamed of.
These interviews represent the innermost reflections of people brave enough to say them out loud. Stories about love and loss and exasperation and courage; about how some people have found the magic formula for contentment and others struggle to get out of bed each day. I was deeply moved that every one of them agreed to sit for a portrait, knowing their personal suffering would be on public show. Whatever led to their loneliness, the people in these interviews want a way out. And some think they’ve found it.
